7 Fujisawa - The village by the edge of a stream, and a bridge leading to it, over which people are passing. In background, overlooking the village on a wooded hill, above the mists, stands the temple Yugi-o-ji; in the foreground a torii, and close to it four blind men following each other by the bank of the stream. This station was crowded with pilgrims visiting the famous temple at this station, and the neighbouring shrine. The imposing buildings of Yugyoji Temple (established in 1325) stand on a hillside in the background. The view of the Ichino torii from the front approach to Toshogu. Ten stone steps called sennin masusugata stand in front of this stone torii. People other than warriors, such as farmers and townspeople, could only go this far when paying respects to the temple. The ditch in the centre and gentle slope difference have been buried and do not exist today. Yasukuni Shinto Shrine was established at Kudan on June 29, 1869 to commemorate the soldiers who died in the Boshin War. Originally called Shokonsha, it was renamed Yasukuni Jinja on June 4, 1879 but continued to be called Shokonsha for some time after the name change. The bronze torii gate was built on December 31, 1887. This is Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond) located at the southeast of Chumon Gate of Todaiji Temple. Since Mt. Wakakusa is visible afar, this is the view from the Nanboku (lit. South-North) approach to the temple when facing southeast. The stairs at west of Nakashima Island and a torii gate are present. This is the spa town of Kiga before the new road to Miyagino opened in 1889. The torii gate a little far back is Yakushido ( a Buddhist temple hall housing a statue of the Buddha of healing,) and the building on the left is Yuyoin. The buildings before them belong to Kameya Inn. The house on the right is Jindairo. Matsuzakaya Inn is across from it on the other side of Susawa River. The building with a white wall on the left is Chokairo of Matsuzakaya Inn. Finally the one in the foreground is Sengokuya. These are Katoya and Kashihaya in front of Ryukoji Temple. The torii gate and lanterns of Ryukomyo Shinto Shrine are visible on the right. Gakushuin (Peer's School) designated Katase Beach as a place for swimming lessons in 1891. The three-story Kashiwaya with its veranda evokes the atmosphere of the time. The Omote-sando approach to Nikko Toshogu is viewed from Nakayama Street. The ditch in the centre no longer exists. At the end of the approach is Toshogu. This is the Nagara Shrine to the south of Miidera (Sonjoji). During the Asuka Era, Emperor Tenchi became a disciple of Takehaya Susanoo no Mikoto and worshipped the deity of Iwakuradani at Nagarayama. The water basin of the Omizusha and twelve square pillars are made of granite, and the Chinese-style barge board has carvings of cod and flying dragons. Issaikyo (complete collection of the Buddhist Scriptures) and statues of the Fudaishi father and son are stored in the Rinzo. The bronze torii was constructed by private donations from Tokugawa Hidetada. Past the Ichino torii from the front approach, the red-painted Toshogu front gate is seen at the top of the steps. At present, statues of Nio stand to the left and right, and Korean dogs are placed to the right and left of the back. The front is in the style of a Buddhist temple and the back is in the style of a Shinto Shrine. In accordance with the Shintoism and Buddhism separation order of 1872, there was a time when the Nio statues in the front were moved to the back of the Daiyuin Nio Gate and the Korean dogs were moved to the front. This is a photo of that period. Going through the Ichino Torii from the Omote Sando (front approach), visitors see the red painted Toshogu front gate above the stone steps. At present, the Nio statue is placed to the left and right of the front, and Komainu (Korean dog) to the right and left of the rear. The front is done in the style of a temple, and the back in the style of a shrine. Under the Shintoism Buddhism division order issued in 1871, the front statue of Nio was moved to the back of Niomon of Daiyuin, and for a time the Komainu were placed in the front.
